How to Select Suitable Electric Heat Tracing Cables According to Pipeline Media?

In industries such as petrochemical, oil and gas transportation, food and pharmaceutical, power and metallurgy, the temperature stability of pipeline media is directly related to production safety, transportation efficiency and product quality. Under low temperature environment, medium solidification, sharp viscosity rise and component phase change can easily cause pipeline blockage, pump overload, pipeline expansion cracking and even process runaway risks. As an active temperature compensation solution, the rationality of electric heat tracing system selection directly determines the heating effect, operating energy consumption and system life cycle. Combined with the HG/T 20514 industry design specification, heat tracing selection shall take medium characteristics as the core benchmark, match pipeline parameters, environmental conditions and working condition requirements, and achieve the optimal balance of technical applicability and operating economy.

1. Core Objectives of Electric Heat Tracing for Pipeline Media

(1) Freeze and condensation protection to ensure transportation continuity

Liquid media such as water, diesel, lubricating oil and aqueous solutions will crystallize, solidify or show exponential viscosity rise when the ambient temperature is lower than their freezing point or pour point, resulting in sharp increase of transportation resistance, excessive pump load, and even pipeline cracking caused by ice expansion. Electric heat tracing continuously compensates heat loss, stabilizes the medium temperature above the freezing point/pour point. For freeze protection, the maintaining temperature is generally 5~10℃ above the medium freezing point or pour point; for media easy to crystallize, 10~15℃ margin is recommended to maintain good fluidity of the medium and ensure continuous and stable pipeline transportation. For gaseous media, it maintains the temperature above the dew point to prevent water vapor condensation, avoid pipeline corrosion caused by acid gas dissolution and liquid water blockage of instrument pipelines.

(2) Process temperature maintenance to stabilize production parameters

Some production processes have strict requirements for medium temperature, such as food-grade oil transportation, polymer reaction feed, chemical rectification medium transportation, etc. Temperature fluctuation will cause product stratification, crystallization, out-of-control reaction rate, and even unqualified products. Process heat tracing electric systems can control the medium temperature fluctuation within ±1℃~±3℃, accurately match process requirements, and ensure stable production process parameters.

(3) Inhibit phase change and component separation to avoid abnormal working conditions

For low-temperature media such as liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquid ammonia and liquid carbon dioxide, temperature fluctuation will easily cause gasification and pressure increase; for some easily crystallizable salt solutions and hot melt media, temperature drop will cause solute precipitation and component separation, blocking pipelines and valves. Electric heat tracing can accurately maintain the medium temperature range, inhibit unnecessary phase change and component change, and avoid working condition faults such as abnormal pressure and pipeline blockage.

2. Core Elements for Selecting Electric Heat Tracing According to Pipeline Media

(1) Medium characteristics: core benchmark for selection

① Thermal physical parameters

First, clarify the key temperature threshold of the medium and determine the target temperature of heat tracing:

- Freeze protection conditions: based on the freezing point (liquid) or dew point (gaseous) of the medium, the maintaining temperature is generally 5~10℃ above the freezing point or pour point; 10~15℃ margin for easy crystallization media. For example, the pour point of No. 0 diesel is about -5℃, and the design maintenance temperature is above 0℃; the freezing point of asphalt is about 60℃, and the design maintenance temperature is 65℃~70℃.

- Process heat tracing conditions: based on the working temperature required by the production process, and set the upper temperature limit at the same time. The maximum surface temperature of heat tracing system shall not exceed the allowable exposure temperature of medium, pipeline lining, gasket and sealing parts, to avoid medium denaturation, coking or pipeline coating aging.

- It is necessary to check the maximum withstand temperature of the medium at the same time. The maximum surface temperature of heat tracing shall not exceed the thermal stability temperature of the medium, nor exceed the temperature resistance limit of pipeline lining and seals.

② Corrosion and compatibility characteristics

The corrosiveness of the medium directly determines the material selection of the outer sheath of the electric heat tracing cable:

- Weakly corrosive media (clear water, drinking water, neutral solutions): polyolefin (PE/PVC) sheathed electric heat tracing cables can be selected, with moderate cost.

- Medium and strong corrosive media (acid-base solutions, sulfur-containing crude oil, chemical media): fluoropolymer (FEP/PFA) sheathed electric heat tracing cables shall be selected, which are resistant to acid, alkali and organic solvents, and adapt to complex corrosion conditions.

- Strongly corrosive and halogen-containing media: special modified fluoroplastic or metal sheathed heating cables shall be selected, and attention shall be paid to the electrochemical compatibility between heating materials and pipeline materials to avoid contact corrosion.

③ Medium phase state and flow characteristics

- Liquid continuous flowing media: self-regulating heating cables are preferred, which automatically adjust power with medium temperature and adapt to load fluctuations.

- Gaseous and easily condensable media: uniform heating structure shall be selected to maintain the temperature above the dew point throughout the process and avoid local condensation.

- Intermittent operation and long-term static media: power redundancy shall be increased to ensure rapid temperature rise in low temperature environment, and temperature controllers shall be equipped for precise temperature control.

(2) Pipeline and environmental boundary conditions

① Pipeline and insulation parameters

Nominal diameter of pipeline, pipe wall material, insulation layer thickness and thermal conductivity are the core parameters for heat loss calculation. The larger the pipe diameter, the thinner the insulation layer, and the higher the thermal conductivity, the greater the heat loss per unit length, and the higher the required heating cable power. The heat loss per unit length of pipeline shall be calculated through standard formulas. The nominal output power of the selected heating cable shall not be less than the calculated heat loss value, and 10%~20% power redundancy shall be reserved.

② Environment and laying conditions

- Ambient temperature: take the local extreme minimum ambient temperature, and additional power redundancy is required in extremely cold regions;

- Laying method: additional heat loss caused by wind speed shall be considered for open-air laying, and heat loss is relatively smaller for trench and buried laying;

- Installation positions: special-shaped parts such as valves, flanges and tees dissipate heat faster, and power compensation shall be carried out at 1.2~1.5 times that of straight pipes.

③ Safety and working condition grades

- Explosion hazardous areas (refineries, chemical tank farms, oil and gas stations, etc.): explosion-proof electric heat tracing cables with corresponding explosion-proof grade must be selected, complying with ATEX or domestic explosion-proof standards, and the explosion-proof grade shall not be lower than the regional hazard level.

- Pipelines with steam purging conditions: high-temperature heating cables resistant to steam purging shall be selected to avoid damage to the heating insulation layer by high-temperature steam.

- Long-distance transmission pipelines: constant-wattage heating cables are preferred, with temperature controllers for zonal temperature control, adapting to power distribution of long circuits. Self-regulating heating cables have limitation on maximum single circuit length. Long pipelines need sectional design, and constant-wattage heating cables are more suitable for long-distance process heat tracing.

(3) Product type matching and verification

① Match product types by temperature grade

- Low-temperature freeze protection scenarios (maintenance temperature ≤65℃): low-temperature self-regulating heating cables are preferred, suitable for clear water, fire water, ordinary water supply and drainage media.

- Medium-temperature heat tracing scenarios (maintenance temperature 65℃~100℃): medium-temperature self-regulating heating cables are selected, suitable for diesel, lubricating oil, aqueous chemical solutions and other media.

- High-temperature process scenarios (maintenance temperature 100℃~200℃): high-temperature self-regulating heating cables or constant-wattage heating cables are selected, suitable for heavy oil, asphalt, hot melt adhesive, high-temperature process media, etc.

- Ultra-high temperature special scenarios: MI mineral-insulated heating cables are selected to meet higher temperature process heat tracing requirements.

② Selection verification steps

Complete selection requires three steps of verification: first, calculate the heat loss per unit length and match the power grade of the heating cable; second, verify the maximum length of a single circuit to avoid excessive starting current caused by overload; third, verify the adaptability of explosion-proof grade and sheath material to working conditions to ensure safety and compliance.

3. Selection Reference for Typical Media

- Clear water/fire sprinkler pipelines: low-temperature self-regulating heating cables, maintaining temperature at 5℃±3℃, polyolefin sheath, explosion-proof type for explosion-proof areas.

- Diesel/lubricating oil pipelines: medium-temperature self-regulating heating cables, maintaining temperature 5℃ higher than pour point, fluoropolymer sheath for sulfur-containing media.

- Asphalt/heavy oil pipe gallery: high-temperature constant-wattage heating cables, zonal temperature control, maintaining transportation temperature, equipped with high-temperature resistant sheath. Asphalt is high viscosity medium. Besides heat tracing, heating rate shall be considered during start and stop to prevent aging caused by local overheating.

- Corrosive chemical solution pipelines: self-regulating heating cables with fluoropolymer sheath, select corresponding sheath material according to medium corrosion grade.

- CEMS flue gas sampling pipelines: integrated heat tracing sampling composite tubes, maintaining 120℃~180℃, constant temperature throughout the process to avoid condensation.

Conclusion

Electric heat tracing selection for pipeline media is a systematic work of multi-dimensional matching of medium characteristics, boundary conditions and product performance, rather than simple selection by power. After selection, overall heat loss calculation should be carried out combining insulation thickness and outer jacket structure. We cannot select heating cable power only according to medium temperature. Taking the thermal and corrosion characteristics of the medium as the core, combined with accurate calculation and verification of pipeline, environment and working condition parameters, we can optimize the operating energy consumption and extend the system service life on the premise of ensuring the heat tracing effect, and achieve the optimal life cycle cost.
